The Nigel Perks Discovery journey begins in Palmerston North. The city that offers sophistication and diversity, while being surrounded by an outdoor enthusiasts dream. Here, Nigel studied Zoology and Geography until 1984.
Over-landing for a year through Asia, Nigel finally achieved his goal of arriving in Africa. Then came the trip of a lifetime – the opportunity to travel overland through Africa for 25 weeks combining the Sahara, Central Africa, the Congo and the game parks of East Africa.
After a further 2 years of running safaris in Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and the Congo, Nigel met Margaret Gibb (Gibb’s Farm) and Aadje Geertsema (Ndutu Safari Lodge) and set up Gibb’s Farm Safaris (GFS).
With Margaret and Aadje’s contact, some of our first safaris were outfitting and guiding the BBC and National Geographic Society. These were dream contracts as we had the opportunity to spend months on end filming and observing wildlife in the famous Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Conservation Area.
This era was the pinnacle of wildlife documentary making, a crew would spend over 14 months making a 1 hour documentary.
